DRILL: ACQUIRE & FIRE v1.0
INSTRUCTIONS
GO TO DRILL

BACKGROUND
This drill was developed to reinforce training objectives presented during a LOW-LIGHT/NO-LIGHT dynamic rifle course offered at FREE STATE GUN RANGE in Middle River, Maryland.

Using a colored marker, a standard USPSA target has 3 different shapes (CIRCLE, SQUARE and TRIANGLE) drawn on the target at random placements. The instructor calls out three shapes in random order. The student illuminates the target, identifies each shape and fires in the order as called out by the instructor. Based on cognitive shooting/cognitive processing concepts this drill helps to build "think before you shoot" target identification, acquisition and shot placement fundamentals.

APPLICATION USE
LIVE FIRE
  1. Grab some sharpies and obtain a standard USPSA target.
  2. Use the Target Setup feature to suggest shapes placement.
  3. Draw shapes from app in the same location on paper target
  4. Go to the Drill and select 'Begin Drill'
  5. The application will say (and display) 3 random shapes and then a beep to indicate commencing fire.
  6. Sling some lead at the shapes identified in the order they were called out.
  7. Once shape locations have been learned, grab a new colored marker, and go to STEP 1.
DRY FIRE
  • Same as LIVE FIRE, but do not use AMMUNITION.
  • Dry fire dirll emphasizes identification and acquisition (versus shot placement, duh...)
  • You'll only get one legit trigger press, unless you get those 1R1 reps in.
  • Instead of the target/marker approach, alternatively get creative and tape/magnet shapes to a wall or door and practice anywhere.
  • The Target Setup feature can be used in full-screen mode on a large screen as your target. There is an auto-generate mode that updates the shapes placement at a regular interval. The update time can be changed in settings.

SETTINGS
The Target Setup and the Drill have settings that can be changed by selecting the icon in the upper right.
  • Most settings are self explanatory
  • PAR TIME: this is the time by which the shooter should have completed their course of fire. This will "BUZZ" the number of seconds indicated after the commence fire "BEEP" sounds.
  • RESET TIME: this is the time after the commence fire "BEEP" sounds that the drill will reset and prompt the shooter to "STAND BY".

    WARNINGS
  • Always follow the 4 rules of firearm safety
  • This is not a shot timer. This will not time shots. This will not detect bangs, pew pews, lasers, trigger resets, dogs barking, your spouse sighing, etc.
  • In order to most effectively hear the commence fire "BEEP" and par time "BUZZ", headphones under ear protection is recommended.
